Folk Workshops at Dolly’s Cottage
Dolly’s Cottage is a 200 year old thatch cottage on the brow of Strandhill Village under the watchful eye of Knocknarea. Known for it’s traditional appearance and appreciation of folk heritage, we are incredibly lucky to host two workshops at Dolly’s Cottage for this years festival.
Crankie Island Workshop
Peter Crann from the Crankie Island Song Project will be showcasing a selection of "Crankie Boxes" that form part of this unique all-Ireland music and art project, Created in collaboration with renowned singer Cathy Jordan. The project involves Cathy Jordan discovering and recording rare traditional Irish songs, while Peter Crann and various Irish illustrators craft original scrolling artwork to complement each song. These are presented using a "Crankie box," a vintage, pre-electric cinema-like device that scrolls illustrations to visually accompany music or stories.
Peter and Cathy also film these performances and share them on CrankieIsland.com and the Crankie Island YouTube channel, making these cultural treasures accessible to a wider audience. During the event at Dolly's Cottage from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM, Peter Crann will demonstrate a selection of Crankie boxes and rare hand-cranked scrolling vintage projectors. This presentation will showcase how the Crankie Island Song Project preserves and revitalizes Irish musical heritage through a visually rich and engaging format. The project is set to launch online on September 27th and can be seen live, with a full band, during the Crankie Island Song Project Tour in October.
From 11:00 – 12:00, Coleman Cogan will be at Dolly’s Cottage alongside his two magnificent Kilmovee Shire Draft Horses, “Ned” & “Ted”. Coleman is a Sligo famer who has returned to working his farm the old way, with horse power…. true horse power! In what will be a great experience for all of the family, Coleman will be there to talk about horse drawn farming and how he trained these beautiful horses to work the land with the old machinery.
Kilmovee Shire Draft Horse Experience
After the workshops are over, there will be two films played on a loop inside the cottage throughout the day so if you are passing by head on in and see which film is on!
